Ironwood

About Ironwood

A small room with heavy things in it.

Ironwood Strength & Movement opened in Redstone Flats in 2016 with four barbells, a rack of kettlebells and a rule that no class would ever go past 12 people. We have added bells and mats since. The rule has not moved.

Most people who walk in have not trained in years, or ever. That is who the place is built for. If you want a wall of machines and a smoothie bar, there is a chain out by the highway that will sell you one.

How the room works

Four rules we do not bend.

01

Twelve people, no more

When the twelfth person signs in, the class is closed. That is the whole business model. A coach cannot correct a squat they never saw.

02

Programs, not workouts

Strength classes run in eight week blocks that build on each other. You are not doing a random circuit somebody thought up at 5 AM.

03

Everything scales

Every movement has a lighter version and a harder one, offered without a speech. Nobody gets singled out for taking either.

04

Loud music, quiet ego

The playlist is loud. Nobody films themselves, nobody grunts for an audience, nobody comments on anyone else's body.

The coaches

Three of us, and we are all on the floor.

No coach here has a desk. If somebody is in the building, they are coaching, mopping or racking bells.

Reyna T.

Head coach, barbell

Reyna opened the doors in 2016 with four barbells and a chalk bucket. She coaches the strength classes and writes every program the studio runs.

Marcus O.

Kettlebell and conditioning

Marcus ran distance for years, then found out he liked lifting heavy things better. He keeps the conditioning classes hard and short.

Jo P.

Mobility and yoga

Jo teaches the slow end of the timetable. If something pinches when you squat, she is the person who figures out why.

The space

2,400 square feet, one floor, no queue.

Six lifting stations, a wall of kettlebells, a mat area that fits the whole class and showers that actually run hot. Parking is free out front and there is a bike rack by the door.
